3621 Botany I VonEbs Copyright The Academy September 12, 2011 :: :: This book is meant for the sole purpose of teaching students at the Academy the Science of Botany. :: :: Chapter 1:: Trees :: As you may have noticed, wood is a central part of our everyday lives here in Aegis. We build with it, we use it for tools, we use it to cook, ect. Without wood we would not be able to function as civilized beings. :: There are three types of wood in Aegis.:: Wood:: Generic wood found on generic trees. It is not special in amy way. Can be used in building, but most ly for accents. Is usually carved into tools and planks. :: Redwood:: This reddish colored wood is rarer than regular wood, so is more sought after. The elves use this wood to build, and it is thought to look better then regular wood. ::Birch Wood:: This is a white colored wood that is rarer than Regular wood, but not sought after. People think it looks ugly, and I tend to agree. :: Saplings:: All trees drop sapplings of its own type, so you will never run out of one type of wood. Only Regular leaves are dropped though, so to get red or birch leaves, you must use shears. The recipe is as follows id on a 3X3 grid and I stands for iron. :: 0 0 0:: 0 I 0:: I 0 0:: :: Chapter Two :: :: Mushrooms:: Mushrooms can be harvested with a hoe at level 10 farming. They are good for teaching farming, because you can't break them.:: Red and Brown Mushrooms exist. Brown have a nuttier flavor and Red have a spice flavor. You can combine them with a bowl to make mushroom soup, a valuable food source. :: Growth:: Dark spaces are best, with little torchlight and no sunlight. under tree cover works, or in root ce llars,:: :: Chapter 3:: :: Wheat:: Seeds:: To grow wheat, you will first need seeds. You can buy them, or you can get them from breaking tall grass. With about 10 seeds, you can start your farm. :: Area:: You need a flat area, however big you want. You will need to till soil to plant the crops. This will require a hoe. ::Recipe for Hoe if S is stick and P is planks:: P P 0: : :: 0 S 0:: 0 S 0:: :: Tilled soil should be within four blocks of a water source. The prefered setup is shown below. S stands for soil and W stands for water.:: S S S S W S S S S:: S S S S W S S S S:: S S S S W S S S S:: S S S S W S S S S:: :: I think you get it. Now it is time to fence off your area, or if underground adequetely light the area. Fences should be stacked 1-2 high around farm, to stop mobs from trampling your crops. By no means leave grass in your field, because mobs will spawn and ruin your day. Place torches on the fences to light the area to stimulate growth at night. :: Planting:: Now you plant the seeds. To do this, just place them in your soil. Now we wait for the seeds to grow. When they turn a yellowish brown color and are 1 meter tall, they are ready for harvest. Usy your hoe on it, and you will recieve seeds and wheat ba ck. Wheat is used for bread and ale. ::Replant your farm so more will grow, you recieve more seeds than you destroyed each replant, so go start building up stores. ::Warning, try to not trample your own crops, that hust slows down growth or kill them.:: Wheat requires level 20 farming to harvest. :: To see more advance, automated, and more awesome wheat farms, see advanced farms in Chapter 8. :: :: Chapter 4 :: Cactus:: ::Getting Cactus:: Go to a desert, and you will probably find some cactus. You need to be level 10 to harvest, To make a cactus farm, you must use sand blicks that do not touch eachother on any sides. See the following diagram where S means sand and B means other block.:: S B S B S:: B S B S B ::S B S B S ::Then, simply place the cactus on the sand and let it grow. You should put torches around to speed things up. :: Harvesting:: When harvesting cactus, hit the bottom of the plant because the top will destroy itself on the botto m. You can replant it whe you are finshed harvesting. ::Uses:: Cactus can be used to make some very devious traps. If you cook cactus in a furnace, it will be cooked into green dye. Simply Apply it to white wool, an d you have a very nice looking piece of green wool. :: ::Chapter 5:: :: Reeds:: Getting Reeds:: Just find some, and take some to start your own farm. I can give you some if you are having a hard t ime. If you hit the middle of the plant, then you will get the top two pieces, leaving the bottom to regrow.:: Setup of Farm:: There is a lot of debate on how to set up reed farms. I have seen it done three different ways, so I will include all three, Note: you need to have 40 farming to destroy reeds with your hoe. :: The "Star" Method :: Reeds require adjascent water, so some people do star shaped farms. The diagram below will show you what it looks like if R is reeds and W is water.:: 0 R R W R 0:: R W R R W :: 0 R R R R ::This one is confusing on paper, but I will try to show you more accurately in class.:: ::"Coastal" Method:: This one sets the reeds up in a line a long a strip of water. R stands for reeds and W stands for water,:: W W W W W W W R R R R R R R W W W W W W W R R R R R R R :: I do not use this method, since I think it is inefficient.:: "Island" Method:: My prefered way to do it, similiar to the "Coastal" Method, but more efficient. Diagram below with R for reeds and W for Water.:: R R R R R R R :: W W W W W W W :: R R R R R R R:: R R R R R R R:: W W W W W W W:: R R R R R R R:: Note: Reeds must be placed on dirt blocks nect to Water. :: See Chapter 8 for more advanced and automated Cactus and Reed Farms.:: Reeds are used to make sugar, paper, books, bookshelves, and Cake!
